SUDAN GOVERNMENT AND PRO-GOVERNMENT MILITIAS: DISPLACEMENT AND KILLING

On 19th March 2014 the Government ordered the displacement of the population of the villages north of Kass. The residents of the villages of Dawis, Hashaba, Lino, Algardood and Khirwa were displaced to IDP camps around Kass.

On the same date, a group of Janjaweed attacked two residents of the IDP Camp north of Kass, Mohammed Abdulmoula and Abdalla Abdulshafie, while they were returning from their place of charcoal burning. Abdalla Abdulshafie was beheaded using a chopper, Mohammed Abdulmoula was shot dead. Then the Janjaweed looted SDG 200 and a mobile.

On 21 March, the Janjaweed attacked Sheariya in South Darfur forcing 2,700 to take shelter at the UNAMID camp. The town was burnt to ashes. Ibrahim Hassan (70 years) was burned inside his house; in addition eight children are still missing.

On 23 March the Rapid Support Force, a pro-Government militia, clashed with the Sudan Liberation Army/Minni Minawi in the village of Donkey Ba'asheem. Many civilians were killed in the cross fire, the village was burnt to ashes, and the entire population was forced to displace.

Recommendations:

SUDO strongly condemns the displacement of the residents of villages north of Kass on the orders of the Government.

SUDO calls on the Sudan Government to fulfil its obligation to protect civilians in Darfur. Pro-government militias which kill and displace civilians should be disbanded without delay.

UNAMID must immediately act to fulfil its mandate to protect civilians in Darfur. It must fully investigate human rights abuses by all parties and make the report of investigations public.
