South Darfur –Situation updates - 23rd to 25th March 2015


Kailak area/South east of Kass locality 23rd March 2015

A woman was attacked and raped at gun point by one of the Janjaweed militia men whilst on her way to the farm. The perpetrator ran away on hearing some people coming. The victim was taken to the hospital and Police was informed but no one was arrested.

Shataya village 24th March

A woman was attacked and raped by thee (3) Janjaweed militia men as she went to collect firewood. She was rescued by some of the villagers on hearing her screaming and the perpetrator ran away. The victim was taken to Shataya hospital and Police was informed but no one was arrested.

Dagdosa village 25th March

Two women 21years old and 19years old were attacked and raped by four Janjaweed militia men, when they went to collect fire wood from the outskirt of the village. They were found by some villagers and taken to the hospital, Police was informed but no action was taken.

Shataya village -25th March

An 18 year old was raped at gun point by Soba Jo who is a police man and a shop owner in Shataya village. On hearing the victim screaming some villagers rushed to Soba shop to help her, but they were threaten by Soba and a friend of him, that they will shoot them. Then the villagers went to the Police station but the police refused to open a case against the perpetrators. Shataya village is one of the voluntary return villages.

SUDO UK calls on the Government to disband the Rapid Support Forces as well as the Janjaweed as these are consistently committing human rights abuses in Darfur. All those individuals or groups responsible for committing human rights violations must be brought to justice.

SUDO UK calls on UNAMID to take strong action in order to fulfil its mandate, including its obligation to “prevent attacks against civilians, within its capability and areas of deployment, without prejudice to the responsibility of the Government of the Sudan”, and the requirement “to investigate and hold accountable those who are responsible, and promote efforts to disarm the Janjaweed and other militias”.
