Pro-Government Militias Targeting Civilians in North and South Darfur


On 6th of July 2014 three girls were raped by pro-government militia group members in KALMA IDP camp south of Nyala City in south Darfur.

On 8th of July 2014 Salih Mahmoud, an IDP and a mobile shop owner in DINAR IDPs camp in Kass, was killed by a pro-Government militia members and his shop was completely looted.

On 13th of July a militia group led by Eisa Al-Faheem kidnapped eight IDPs from the IDPs camp in TAWILA. Although the ransom requested (totalling 300 SDG [$53]) was paid, the militia did not release the IDPs.

On 16th of July militia members kidnapped and raped three girls who were among twenty women from TAWILA locality working on their farms. The police and UNAMID were informed but apparently nothing has been done.

On 17th of July around 10.00am a teacher was kidnapped from inside KASS town in south Darfur.  The police and UNAMID were informed.

In the same day Adam Ishaq was killed and his car stolen while he was driving on the road from Kass to Nyala.

During this month eight (8) persons were kidnapped from KALMA IDPs camp and they are still missing.

SUDO UK calls on the Governmentt o disband the Janjaweed and other pro-government militias, and investigate and hold accountable those who are responsible for committing human rights abuses.

SUDO UK calls on UNAMID to take strong action in order to fulfil its mandate, which includes the requirement “To contribute to the protection of civilian populations under imminent threat of physical violence and prevent attacks against civilians” and “to monitor, verify and promote efforts to disarm the Janjaweed and other militias”.
