Killing, looting and Rape by the RSF and Abo-Taira Forces in Darfur 9th March-12March 2015


East Darfur/East Jabal Marra-9th March

When the Janjaweed militia attacked the areas of East Jabal Marra, civilians were forced to displace from their villages. Some of those civilians displaced to camps around Al Fasher, Shangel Tobaye and Nyala, but other were forced to flee to the top of the mountain above Fanga area. They are surrounded by the militia, preventing them from getting any assistance, the number of those who are being surrounded is around 956 persons, and the majority are women and children. These civilians are lacking health services and food as a result three women died from heavy bleeding and four children passed away due to unknown illnesses.

The two (2) children: Abdulmonen Salih and Abdulazeez Yahya.

On the same day in east Jabal Marra, the RSF and Abu-Tira forces attacked, looted and destroyed the civilian farms in Sirro and Bardani villages and displaced all the citizens from their villages.

South Darfur - Mershing village -10th March

A group of Janjaweed militia attacked Hassan Ahmed Abdallah and his son Al-Hadi Hassan, in their farm 2km from Mershing village, to loot their mobile phones, when they resisted the attackers they were both shot, the son died immediately and the father later died in Nyala hospital.

South Darfur- Nyala city-10th March

As a result of the intense presence of different pro-government militias in the city, gun shots and exchange of fire between these groups are heard by the citizen on a daily basis, and it became unsafe to move around the city almost all the time.

On the 10th March in Riyad neighborhood five (5) children were severely injured by an ammunition's blast that belongs to one of the militia groups.

Otash IDP camp -12th March

On the 12th March around 1.00pm a fire broke out in Otash IDP camp burning to ashes twenty four (24) houses, no one was hurt. Those who lost their houses and belongings are still sleeping on the open with very little assistance from some NGOs.

As several fire breaks out in the last few month for an UN-known reason in some IDPs camp, the IDPs believe that it is part of the government policy to disperse the camps by force. No one was arrested.

East Jabal Marra –Fanga village

On 12th March around 9.00pm three (3) members of RSF attacked Abdulnabi Eisa in his house intending to loot his shop, when he resisted the attackers they shot him dead, raped his wife and ran away when the villagers rushed to the house.

SUDO UK calls on the Government to disband the Rapid Support Forces as well as the Janjaweed as these are consistently committing human rights abuses in Darfur. All those individuals or groups responsible for committing human rights violations must be brought to justice.

SUDO UK calls on UNAMID to take strong action in order to fulfil its mandate, including its obligation to “prevent attacks against civilians, within its capability and areas of deployment, without prejudice to the responsibility of the Government of the Sudan”, and the requirement “to investigate and hold accountable those who are responsible, and promote efforts to disarm the Janjaweed and other militias”.
