​Killing and Looting by the RSF and looming tribal fighting in Darfur - 18th to 22nd March 2015

East Jabal Marra 18th March

A group of Rapid Support Forces (RSF) attacked, looted, burned and beat up civilians in Shelow village, as a result some of the civilians escaped up the mountains and others were displaced to Dobo-Alomda area.

West Jabal Marra 18th March

On their way back from Karang local market, Adam Eisa and Haroun Adam were attacked by around twenty (25) RSF members, killing Adam Haroun. They severely injured Adam Eisa and looted their belongings.

North Darfur Mellit town 19th March

On 19th March a group of Zaiyadeya militia men attacked a lorry loaded with groundnuts in the Dushma area, injuring nine (9) passengers (they are all from the Berti tribe) and looting the lorry. And then they attacked and looted Dusham village and its market.

On the following day (20th March) a group of Zaiyadeya militia men on twenty-seven (27) 4x4 vehicles ambushed a lorry coming from Al-Fasher on the outskirts of Mellit town, killing thirteen (13) persons;

On the 22nd March a fight erupted between the Berti and Zaiyadeya tribes, four (4) from Berti were killed, including a women, and six (6) from the Zaiyadeya tribe. The government has not intervened to stop or contain the conflict up to the date of this report.

South Darfur Musa’dun area 22nd March

For the fourth time a tribal conflict is looming between the Salamat and Fallata tribes. A group from the Fallata looted some cows from Musa’dun village belonging to the Salamat tribe. The Salamat followed the perpetrators, killing one of them and injuring eleven (11). The situation remains very tense.

East Jabal Marra 22nd March

An Antonov airplane bombarded the area of Daba-Nayra, killing a number of cattle and burning a large area of farm lands.

North Darfur-Tawila 22nd March

Yahaya Mohamed Musa was attacked in his shop by four (4) RSF members in a 4x4 vehicle. They killed him, and looted around twenty (20) mobile phones, 30 SDG (Sudanese pound) and his car. The police was informed but no action was taken.

East Jabal Marra- Fanga area 20th March

A group from the RSF attacked Abu Zait project in Fanga area, killed five (5) children, kidnapped three (3) women, raped them afterwards and left them in the open.

East Jabal Marra- Wadi-Osher 20th March

A group of the RSF on around (25) 4x4 vehicles, killed some herders and looted a number of cattle from the Wadi-Oshar area. They then headed towards the area west of Jabal Marra.

North Darfur- Al-Fasher Nyala Road-20th March

A passenger minibus was stopped by the RSF who were in five (5) 4x4 vehicle on the road between Al-Fasher and Nyala, killing the driver Ali (33yrs old) and looting the passengers.

East Jabal Marra-Toro area-20th March

A group of RSF members attacked and raped six (6) girls who went to collect firewood in Toro area east of Fanga. The girls were later found in open land by some citizens who took them to Derbat hospital and reported the incident to Derbat police station.


SUDO UK calls on the Government to disband the Rapid Support Forces as well as the Janjaweed as these are consistently committing human rights abuses in Darfur. All those individuals or groups responsible for committing human rights violations must be brought to justice.

SUDO UK calls on UNAMID to take strong action in order to fulfil its mandate, including its obligation to “prevent attacks against civilians, within its capability and areas of deployment, without prejudice to the responsibility of the Government of the Sudan”, and the requirement “to investigate and hold accountable those who are responsible, and promote efforts to disarm the Janjaweed and other militias”.
