Janjaweed Attack Ongoing in Kereinek Town, West Darfur

Update: 07/12/2021

The number of deaths have increased to 53, including 8 from the armed groups. Geneina remains tense, despite the Sudanese Armed Forces bringing in reinforcements from Zalingei.

At the time of this report (13.00, 05/12/2021) an attack that began yesterday on Kereinek Town in West Darfur continues. Monitors report that at least seven had died, more than 15 have sustained injuries and a number of houses in Abuja IDP Camp and several other neighborhoods have been destroyed.

The attack began on December 4 following a dispute at the local market between two individuals, from the Masalit and an Arab tribe respectively. This dispute quickly escalated to an armed clash between the Masalit and Arab tribe after members of the Janjaweed militias and armed movements joined to support the two parties. This fighting continued late Saturday evening and resumed today, on December 5.

This morning, the Janjaweed militia attacked Kereinek Town again in larger numbers riding 4X4 cars, motorbikes, camels and horses. They opened fire and attacked the local market, Abuja IDP camp and surrounding neighborhoods burning and looting houses and crops.

Monitors say this tension has been extended to Geneina city following the arrival of injured persons and their relatives. There was also report of gunfire from a neighborhood in Geneina city.
