Janjaweed Kill Five During Attack on Golo Following Defeat to SLA-AW

Central Darfur/West Jabbal Marra

On the 23rd January 2015, a group of Janjaweed militia gathered and moved from Zalingei, in Central Darfur, toward SLA-AW positions in West Jebel Marra. After the militia passed Golo, under the control of Government troops, they were ambushed by SLA-AW in Sorong and defeated.

Consequently, the remaining Janjaweed forces retreated back into Golo. Upon their return they looted the market and homes of civilians throughout Golo. They forcibly displaced civilians and looted thousands of heads of livestock including:

1. 2,900 Sheep, Goats and Cows

2. 600 Camels

3. 80 Donkeys

They further killed the following five people:

1. Adam Hassan

2. El-Sadeg Younis

3. Igbal Yagoub(f)

4. Dawood Kiba

5. Ahmed wad Faki

SUDO UK calls on the Government to disband the Rapid Support Forces as well as the Janjaweed as these are consistently committing human rights abuses in Darfur. All those individuals or groups responsible for committing human rights violations must be brought to justice.

SUDO UK calls on UNAMID to take strong action in order to fulfill its mandate, including its obligation to “prevent attacks against civilians, within its capability and areas of deployment, without prejudice to the responsibility of the Government of the Sudan”, and the requirement “to investigate and hold accountable those who are responsible, and promote efforts to disarm the Janjaweed and other militias”.
